SIBU, Feb 17 – A new 400-metre bridge is set to be built across the Igan River, linking Sibu West Bank to the city centre. This major infrastructure project, planned by the Sarawak government, aims to enhance connectivity, spur economic growth, and improve accessibility for local residents.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg announced the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to infrastructure development. Speaking at the SUPP 2025 Chinese New Year Open House, he noted that the bridge’s construction aligns with the state’s broader goal of strengthening road networks and economic opportunities.

“I was informed by Councillor Kelvin Lau that this bridge is only 400 metres long. If we can complete the seven-kilometre bridge at Batang Lupar, I am sure this bridge will not be a problem,” Abang Johari stated.

To oversee the project’s implementation, he directed Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, and Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, to lead a task force.
“This bridge not only connects Sibu West Bank and the city centre but also opens up new routes to Dalat and Mukah. I urge Datuk Dr Annuar and Datuk Michael to collaborate on this project because they understand the needs of the local community,” he added.
Economic Impact and Infrastructure Development
Beyond improving connectivity, Abang Johari highlighted the bridge’s potential to support economic activities in Sibu West Bank. He pointed out that the area has great potential for rubber plantations and paddy cultivation. With improved accessibility, the state aims to achieve its target of 240,000 metric tonnes of paddy production by 2030.

Additionally, he emphasized that the bridge should not only serve as a transportation link but also as a new landmark for Sibu.
“Don’t be alang-alang. Build a beautiful bridge. Don’t lose to the Kemena Bridge in Bintulu, which is similar to the San Francisco Bridge,” he remarked.
The announcement was made in the presence of Sarawak Deputy Premier and SUPP President, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, and Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.

With the planned construction, residents of Sibu West Bank can look forward to better infrastructure, enhanced economic opportunities, and a modernized cityscape in the near future.
