KUCHING – A previously underutilised open space in Lorong Bayor Bukit 14 has been transformed into a vibrant community park, officially unveiled in a ceremony presided over by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor.
The project represents a successful collaboration between federal and local authorities to enhance residential neighbourhoods.
Dato Wee Hong Seng, the Mayor of MBKS, highlighted that the initiative was executed under the national Pembangunan Landskap Persekitaran Kehidupan programme.
This scheme is funded by the Jabatan Landskap Negara (JLN), which operates under the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT).
The landscaping and construction work commenced on 11 June 2025 and was completed ahead of its original schedule on 1 October 2025.
The contractor, SHUMS ENTERPRISE, was appointed through an open tender process and delivered the project within the designated timeframe.
“In just a few months, this open space has been transformed into a beautiful, welcoming, and lively park for the local community,” Dato Wee stated during the opening event.
He emphasised that the project demonstrates how effective cooperation between different tiers of government can yield tangible benefits for residents.
The upgraded facility now boasts a comprehensive range of new amenities designed to promote physical activity and social interaction.
These features cater for residents of all ages, from playground equipment for children to exercise stations for adults and accessible walking paths for senior citizens.
The Mayor confirmed that the development supports MBKS’s broader strategic goals of being recognised as both a Child Friendly City and an Age-Friendly City.
These designations require creating public spaces that are safe, inclusive, and accessible for all demographic groups.
“Together, these goals remind us to build a city that promotes health, happiness, and care for both people and the environment for today and for future generations,” he remarked to attendees at the ceremony.
The park’s introduction forms part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improving green spaces throughout the municipality.
Dato Wee pledged that MBKS would continue to enhance public parks and recreational areas, aiming to foster community well-being and strengthen social bonds among residents.
This project aligns with urban planning trends across Malaysia that prioritise the creation of quality public realms.
Such initiatives have been shown to improve public health outcomes, increase property values, and encourage community cohesion in residential neighbourhoods.
