New RM250,000 Drainage System Completed in Kampung Pulau Melayu to Curb Flood Risks

MIRI – A recently completed concrete drainage system in Kampung Pulau Melayu is expected to reduce flooding and alleviate issues of water stagnation long-faced by residents.

The 441-metre drainage channel, valued at RM250,000, has replaced an old uneven earth drain that often overflowed during heavy downpours. The new structure is 0.9 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep.

Funding for the project was provided through the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) 2024. The allocation was channeled by Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who also serves as the Piasau state assemblyman, aiming to upgrade critical rural infrastructure.

Work commenced in July of last year and has now been completed. On Thursday, Datuk Sebastian made a site visit to review the newly constructed drain.

“Basic infrastructure is an important element in rural development,” he said, emphasising that the improved drainage will help resolve water retention and flooding during the rainy season, enabling residents to live more comfortably and with greater security.

He further noted that the state government intends to continue prioritising infrastructure improvements in phased efforts. He also urged local residents to keep village drains clean and free from refuse to ensure the system’s long-term effectiveness.

This project is part of broader efforts in Miri. According to Miri City Council officials, over RM22.7 million in RTP allocations have been disbursed over the past two years to support 128 infrastructure projects, including roads, drains, and street lighting.

Similarly, the Sarawak government has committed RM316 million to coastal erosion and flood mitigation schemes across the state, including Sarawak’s Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) projects slated for implementation starting in 2025.
