KUCHING (17-May): A new Kuching International Airport (KIA) is on the horizon, designed with future generations in mind. Although the project is not slated for immediate implementation, it is a strategic move to support Sarawak’s growing infrastructure needs.

Forward-Looking Vision for Sarawak’s Growth

During a press conference at Baitulmakmur Building II on Thursday (May 16), Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, emphasized the long-term benefits of the new airport. “At that time, maybe Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and I are no longer around, but at least this plan will be for the leaders and people in the future,” he stated.

Addressing Current Limitations

Abdul Karim highlighted that the current Kuching International Airport is struggling to handle the increasing number of passengers. “The KIA is currently accommodating more passengers and has outlived its purpose when it was first built many years ago,” he noted. The existing airport’s capacity has been surpassed, necessitating the development of a more suitable facility.

Plans for a Modern and Multifaceted Airport

The minister revealed that while the old KIA will continue to operate, potentially for private use, the new airport will be designed to accommodate both passengers and commercial cargo. “We are already a hub for seaports therefore (we would want to be a) hub for aviation,” said Premier Abang Johari. This strategic vision aims to position Kuching as a central node in both sea and air transportation.

Economic and Industrial Benefits

The construction of the new airport is expected to have significant positive impacts on various industries, particularly the construction sector. “Building a new airport can have a positive effect especially on the construction industry,” Abdul Karim mentioned, underlining the broader economic benefits of the project.

Long-Term Planning for Sarawak’s Infrastructure

While immediate construction is not on the agenda, the plan for a new KIA underscores Sarawak’s commitment to future-proofing its infrastructure. The Sarawak government will continue to deliberate and refine the plans to ensure the project meets the needs of tomorrow’s leaders and citizens.
