MIRI, Feb 3 – Nine families from Kampung Lereng Bukit in Miri have been displaced due to a landslide that occurred on January 29. The affected families are currently seeking temporary shelter at a relief centre as authorities work on resettling them.
Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, confirmed the incident today and highlighted that the Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) is coordinating efforts for both immediate aid and relocation plans for the victims.
Following a meeting on the resettlement of residents from Kampung Lereng Bukit and Kampung Haji Waheed, Lee announced that a donation of RM200,000 had been pledged to assist the flood and landslide victims in the region.
“We are grateful to several developers who have stepped forward to help. Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd has offered four houses as part of their corporate social responsibility initiative for a three-month period, while a site in Kuala Baram is also being considered for temporary accommodation,” Lee said. A team has been sent to evaluate these options, along with a previously used facility from the Covid-19 period.
Additionally, the Sarawak Housing Commission has been approached to provide long-term accommodation for the displaced families while authorities continue to assess the possibility of relocating them permanently.
Authorities have also started an assessment of other homes in the area that may be at risk due to the landslide. According to Lee, reports indicate that more than nine houses could potentially be affected, prompting a second inspection by the disaster management committee to identify high-risk areas and determine further measures for relocation.
Expressing thanks to Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd and other developers for their support, Lee stressed the urgency of securing temporary housing for the families affected by the disaster.
