KUCHING – The Sarawak Legislative Assembly has taken a significant step towards reinforcing transparency and accountability with the formation of the Ombudsman Special Select Committee.
The move is intended to ensure that complaints relating to public service delivery are given structured attention at the legislative level.
The committee was formally introduced during the 19th Sarawak DUN sitting, where Kota Sentosa Assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin emphasised that the initiative should not be seen as a political manoeuvre.
Instead, he described it as a reflection of the government’s determination to strengthen governance and build a system that is more responsive to the needs of the people.
“Today, we are taking another important step by ensuring that the findings and reports produced through the Ombudsman process receive proper legislative attention through this committee. This demonstrates a government that is confident enough to accept scrutiny because it is committed to continuous improvement,” Yap stated during the debate.
The Ombudsman mechanism, which has been adopted in several countries, is designed to provide citizens with a formal channel to raise concerns about administrative shortcomings.
By establishing a dedicated committee within the Sarawak Assembly, the state is aligning itself with international practices that prioritise independent review and oversight.
Yap further explained that the committee would create space for impartial and structured assessments of issues raised by the public before they are presented for consideration at the assembly.
He noted that this additional layer of review would help strengthen institutional accountability and reinforce public confidence in governance.
“This creates an additional layer of institutional accountability that strengthens public confidence in governance,” he added.
Observers have pointed out that the creation of such a committee could help bridge gaps between citizens and government institutions, particularly in areas where service delivery has been a recurring concern.
The Ombudsman framework is expected to provide a more systematic approach to handling grievances, ensuring that they are not overlooked or dismissed without proper examination.
