KOTA SAMARAHAN – Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to resolving persistent water pressure issues in Kampung Baru, as concerns continue to mount among residents.
A recent site visit, led by ADUN P197 Kota Samarahan, Rubiah Wang, alongside representatives from Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd and local agencies, aimed to assess the ongoing challenges and progress of remedial works.
The delegation included Mrs. Maselni Binti Jamal, Acting CEO of Sarawak Water, and Mr. Ahmad bin Abdul Razak, the Samarahan District Officer.
During the visit, it was confirmed that efforts to connect new pipes and upgrade the distribution network are nearing completion. However, several areas, particularly those at the far end of the village, still experience low water pressure.
One of the primary factors contributing to the issue is the unregulated use of individual water pumps by some residents. These pumps, while intended to boost household supply, can disrupt overall water pressure distribution.
Sarawak Water has announced plans to inspect and monitor homes with such pumps to ensure equitable water access for all, especially those at the network’s extremities.
The problem is further compounded by ageing infrastructure. Many existing pipes are no longer capable of handling current pressure demands, and recent bursts in several locations have exacerbated distribution inefficiencies.
While previous upgrades had improved water supply to Samarahan, the growing population and increased residential development have placed additional strain on the system.
In a significant development, the state government has allocated over RM300 million for a comprehensive old pipe replacement project across Kota Samarahan, including Kampung Baru.
This initiative, already underway, is expected to be completed within 12 months. The project aims to modernise the water distribution system, ensuring more stable and reliable supply for residents.
Additionally, the upgrade of the Batu Kitang Treatment Facility, slated for completion in October, is anticipated to further enhance water availability and pressure in the region.
Rubiah Wang emphasised that the welfare and comfort of residents remain a top priority. Authorities will continue to monitor progress closely and address any emerging issues promptly.
“We are confident that, with the implementation of these projects, water supply will become more stable and better meet the needs of our growing community,” she stated.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with Sarawak Water during the inspection and monitoring phases to facilitate a smoother transition and ensure that improvements benefit everyone equally.
