KUCHING – The Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division has detained 102 foreign nationals during a large-scale raid known as Ops Mahir, carried out at two construction sites around the city.
The operation, which began at 1.30pm, was launched following public complaints and intelligence monitoring by the enforcement division. Officers checked a total of 215 individuals during the raid, leading to the arrest of 86 men and 16 women for various immigration offences.
According to the Sarawak Immigration Department, those detained are suspected of violating provisions under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963. They have since been placed at the Immigration Detention Depot for further investigation.
The department stressed that this operation reflects its strong commitment to upholding Malaysia’s immigration laws. It also serves as a reminder that foreign workers in the country must comply strictly with the regulations set by the authorities.
A spokesperson from the department said that Ops Mahir will continue to be carried out periodically to address illegal immigration issues, particularly in sectors such as construction, where the demand for foreign labour is high.
“The department will not compromise in taking stern action against individuals or employers who disregard the law. Members of the public are urged to provide information on any suspicious activities involving foreign nationals so that appropriate enforcement can be taken,” the spokesperson said.
The Sarawak Immigration Department further reminded that employers who hire or harbour illegal immigrants may also face action under the law. Such offences carry penalties including heavy fines, imprisonment, or both.
