SIBU – The Malaysian Immigration Department, through its Special Action Team, conducted a large-scale operation dubbed “Ops Sapu” in Sibu yesterday, deploying 18 officers to strengthen law enforcement and curb the presence of illegal immigrants in the area.
During the operation, immigration officers carried out inspections at two separate locations in Sibu town, checking a total of 50 individuals. Following thorough checks, 34 people were detained for suspected violations under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.
The detained individuals are currently undergoing further investigation, while authorities are also tracing potential employers and facilitators linked to illegal employment or harboring of undocumented immigrants.
In a statement, the Malaysian Immigration Department stressed its firm commitment to enforce immigration laws and warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found breaking the law. “Operations like Ops Sapu will continue from time to time to safeguard national security and uphold the sovereignty of Malaysia,” the department added.
Local residents welcomed the operation, highlighting concerns about the social and economic impact of undocumented immigrants in the region. Community leaders emphasized that consistent enforcement ensures public safety, deters illegal activities, and maintains confidence in local governance.
Immigration officials reiterated that the operation is part of a nationwide strategy to combat illegal immigration, enhance border security, and protect the welfare of both local citizens and documented foreign workers. Officers also reminded the public to report any suspicious activity involving undocumented immigrants to the nearest immigration office or police station.
