Dato Wee Hong Seng delivered his remarks on behalf of YB Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak, who was unable to attend the event.

In his speech, Dato Wee expressed deep appreciation to the Sarawak State Health Department for organizing the initiative, highlighting the urgent need to tackle non-communicable diseases related to lung health. He noted the rising risks linked to smoking, vaping, and exposure to air pollutants within the community.
“Ops Selamat PaPa is a timely enforcement and advocacy program that supports the new Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852),” said Dato Wee. This Act has been enforced in stages since October 1, 2024, aiming to control the use and promotion of smoking products, including traditional cigarettes, vape, and electronic cigarettes.

The Act 852 places strict controls on the advertising, promotion, sponsorship, and sale of smoking products. Immediate enforcement, effective since October 2024, includes bans on selling smoking products disguised as toys, advertising in public spaces, and sales near schools, markets, vending machines, and online.
Phased enforcement will continue with the registration of smoking products starting October 1, 2025. The Act is designed to protect current and future generations from the harmful effects of smoking and related substances.
Dato Wee concluded by emphasizing the importance of community cooperation to ensure the success of Ops Selamat PaPa and the wider public health goals of Sarawak. – WEE HONG SENG
