KUCHING, Nov 3 — The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has been conferred The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, marking a momentous recognition of his contributions to strengthening relations between Japan and Malaysia.
The announcement was made by the Government of Japan on November 3 as part of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations awarded to foreign nationals. The honour is among Japan’s highest, reserved for individuals who have made exceptional efforts in promoting friendship and cooperation with Japan.
The Sarawak Premier, known for his progressive leadership and focus on sustainable development, has played a vital role in enhancing economic, environmental, and educational ties between Sarawak and Japan.
Under his leadership, Sarawak has established strong partnerships with major Japanese corporations, particularly in the renewable energy sector. His administration has championed projects involving hydrogen and ammonia development, aligning with Japan’s long-term clean energy goals. These efforts have positioned Sarawak as an essential partner in Japan’s energy transition and LNG supply security.
Beyond economic initiatives, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Zohari has been instrumental in advancing environmental collaborations such as reforestation and biodiversity conservation, involving Japanese universities and organisations. His commitment extends to academic and youth exchange programmes, fostering mutual understanding and goodwill between the people of Japan and Sarawak.
