KUCHING — Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched a significant upgrade of Padungan Garden’s public toilets, reinforcing the heritage precinct’s appeal through improved amenities under its BP1 infrastructure allocation.
The project, formally initiated at a site handover ceremony this week, aligns with Kuching’s UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status by enhancing facilities for tourists exploring the century-old neighborhood’s culinary and cultural landmarks.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasized the upgrade’s strategic importance: “While seemingly small, this project impacts tourism experience and heritage preservation. Visitors and residents deserve dignified facilities in our iconic spaces.”
Deputy Mayor Dato Zaeidi Suhaili, councillors Chai Ju Long, Judy Kho, Eric Tay Tze Kok, and senior officers attended the ceremony, signalling MBKS’s commitment to liveable, sustainable urban development.
Located in Padungan’s historic core—home to the famous white cat statue and burgeoning food scene—the restroom serves thousands of annual visitors. Its redesign addresses growing foot traffic driven by Kuching’s gastronomic reputation, with 78% of international tourists ranking clean public facilities as “critical” in heritage areas according to 2024 Sarawak Tourism Board surveys.
The upgrade advances MBKS’s broader strategy to support Padungan’s dual identity: a nostalgic cultural enclave and modern culinary destination. Construction begins immediately following the handover, incorporating water-saving fixtures and accessibility features compliant with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 for inclusive public spaces.
