KUCHING – The production of biomass from palm kernels at the Kernel Processing Plant (KCP) in Lubok Antu has the potential to significantly lower livestock prices in Sarawak, said Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
Speaking at the Sarawak-level International Forest Day 2025 celebration at the Forest Research Centre on Saturday, the Premier explained that one of the main contributors to the high cost of livestock such as cattle and goats is Sarawak’s continued reliance on imported animal feed.
“When we break down the palm kernel to produce biomass, it can be used to make feed for goats and cows.
This will reduce our dependence on imported feed and allow us to raise healthier livestock at a lower cost,” he said.
He pointed out that during Hari Raya Korban, the cost of sacrificial animals such as cattle can reach RM12,000 each, underscoring the urgency of addressing feed supply issues.
RM30 Million Allocation for Lubok Antu
The Sarawak Government has allocated RM30 million through the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) to support the development of this biomass production initiative in Lubok Antu.
According to the Premier, repurposing palm kernel waste into livestock feed not only benefits farmers by reducing costs, but also adds value to the palm oil industry and creates a sustainable circular economy.
“Beyond feed, the process also enhances the commercial value of the crop and contributes to higher earnings for growers,” he added.
The initiative reflects the state’s broader commitment to integrating green technology, boosting agricultural productivity, and reducing reliance on imports to improve rural livelihoods and food security.
