MIRI – The Ministry of Works has reaffirmed its resolve to ensure the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak project is executed precisely and delivered efficiently, particularly its final Work Package Contract 11 (WPC 11) section.
The most significant visible progress lies in the 300-metre Bukit Song viaduct, currently at 98 percent completion and expected to open to traffic by the end of September, with full handover slated for October 2025.
Constructed as a response to unstable soil that rendered traditional embankment construction unviable, this elevated structure offers a reliable and enduring alternative.
Meanwhile, WPC 11’s final batch of work involves the 4.2-kilometre road upgrade on the Lambir (Mile 8) stretch, which cannot commence until Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd has completed the replacement of old water pipelines a move prompted by prior burst incidents.
Project stakeholders have outlined a phased approach commencing in the second quarter of 2026, with an expected 24-month implementation period.
Work Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted that while the overall schedule has shifted, the alterations are essential to preserve Miri’s water supply stability and avert future deterioration of new infrastructure.
He also emphasised ongoing, close coordination between JKR Sarawak and the contracting agencies, backed by stringent supervision to guarantee seamless execution.
Once both the viaduct and Lambir upgrades are completed, WPC 11 which caps off the approximately 786-kilometre Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak will unlock considerable gains in regional connectivity, road safety, and socioeconomic vitality.
