BETONG – The Betong Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE) marked Ramadan with a gesture of generosity by distributing 300 packs of lambuk porridge to the local community on Tuesday.
The initiative was organised in a drive-through format, allowing residents to collect their meals without leaving their vehicles.
This approach ensured smooth traffic flow and provided convenience for recipients, particularly the elderly and families arriving in groups.
The programme highlighted the active role of senior citizens in community service, demonstrating that PAWE functions not only as a social hub but also as a platform for fostering unity and compassion.
By engaging in charitable activities, the centre continues to strengthen bonds among residents while promoting values of care and inclusivity.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, who is also the Layar State Assemblyman, attended the event.
He greeted participants warmly and joined in the symbolic distribution of bubur lambuk, underscoring his support for community-driven initiatives.
During his visit, Datuk Gerald also inspected PAWE’s facilities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that centres such as these remain active contributors to social development.
His presence was seen as encouragement for senior citizens to continue engaging in meaningful programmes that benefit the wider community.
Bubur lambuk, a traditional porridge often prepared and shared during Ramadan, carries cultural significance as a symbol of togetherness.
The distribution of the dish in Betong reflects a broader tradition across Malaysia, where mosques, organisations, and community groups prepare and share the meal to strengthen social ties during the fasting month.
The event in Betong is part of a wider pattern of Ramadan activities across Sarawak, where local organisations and government representatives collaborate to promote unity and compassion.
Such initiatives not only provide sustenance but also reinforce the importance of collective responsibility and care for one another.
Residents expressed appreciation for the effort, noting that the drive-through system made the process efficient and accessible.
For many, the programme was more than just a food distribution; it was a reminder of the enduring values of generosity and solidarity that Ramadan seeks to uphold.
As the fasting month continues, PAWE Betong’s contribution stands as a testament to the role of senior citizens in shaping community spirit.
Their involvement in charitable activities demonstrates that age is no barrier to meaningful participation in society, and their efforts continue to inspire younger generations to embrace the values of sharing and compassion.
