KAPIT – A ceremony recognising the appointment and extension of service for tribal leaders in Pelagus has highlighted the importance of integrity and commitment in community leadership.
Held at the State Government Complex, Jalan Bleteh, the event saw 10 newly appointed tribal leaders and 53 leaders whose service was extended receiving their official certificates. The ceremony was officiated by Pelagus State Assembly Member Wilson Nyabong Ijang and organised by the Kapit District Office.
Also present were Kapit District Officer Thomas Geoffrey Kandawang, department heads, representatives, and community leaders. The gathering underscored the government’s continued emphasis on strengthening grassroots leadership to ensure effective communication between authorities and rural communities.
In his address, Thomas Geoffrey Kandawang reminded attendees that the roles of tribal leader and Tuai Rumah carry significant responsibility. He stressed that these positions serve as the main link between the government and longhouse residents, ensuring that policies are conveyed clearly and that local development is implemented harmoniously.
He noted that Tuai Rumah leaders are entrusted with maintaining order and fostering cooperation within their communities, while also acting as the government’s channel for disseminating official information.
Meanwhile, Wilson Nyabong Ijang reinforced the importance of integrity and accountability in fulfilling these duties. He urged tribal leaders to work closely with relevant agencies, particularly in defining longhouse boundaries, to prevent disputes and safeguard community interests.
The ceremony also honoured 23 Tribal Chiefs who received certificates of appreciation upon the completion of their service terms. Their contributions were recognised as part of the government’s effort to acknowledge the dedication of leaders who have played a vital role in maintaining unity and supporting development initiatives.
The event reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that leadership at the community level remains strong, inclusive, and effective. By empowering tribal leaders and Tuai Rumah, authorities aim to foster collaboration that supports long-term development in Pelagus and strengthens the bond between rural communities and the state administration.
Officials emphasised that the appointment and recognition of tribal leaders is not only a formality but also a reinforcement of trust. The expectation is that these leaders will continue to uphold integrity, safeguard community harmony, and contribute to the progress of the Pelagus constituency.
