SIBU – More than 100 residents gathered at the Sungai Antu Hawker Centre on Thursday evening for a Chinese New Year dinner hosted by the Pelawan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Service Centre.
The event was officiated by Penghulu Ting Tien Huat, representing Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Pelawan assemblyman. His attendance reflected the emphasis placed on community engagement during festive seasons.
Residents from different backgrounds came together, mirroring the diversity that defines Sibu. Guests shared traditional dishes and warm conversations, reinforcing how cultural celebrations bring people closer.
The evening featured singing performances and a lucky draw, keeping the crowd engaged. In keeping with Chinese New Year customs, mandarin oranges and red envelopes were distributed, symbolising prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
Organisers said the dinner went beyond celebration. It served as a platform to strengthen ties among residents of various races and age groups, highlighting Sarawak’s inclusive spirit.
Events like this play an important role in multicultural towns such as Sibu, where harmony and mutual respect remain central to community life. The Pelawan Service Centre’s initiative showed how festive gatherings strengthen unity while preserving cultural traditions.
