SIBU – The 2026 Class B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme Handover Ceremony, organised by DUN N.54 Pelawan, was successfully held at the SMK Sacred Heart Hall in Sibu on Saturday.
The event was officiated by YB Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government of Sarawak, who also serves as the state assemblyman for N.54 Pelawan.
The initiative has enabled 500 participants to obtain their Class B2 motorcycle driving licences. The programme was designed to assist low-income groups by reducing the financial burden of acquiring a valid licence, thereby improving mobility and access to opportunities.
Beyond affordability, the scheme also aims to cultivate responsible and knowledgeable road users through structured training and assessment.
Datuk Michael Tiang highlighted that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to supporting communities in practical ways.
He noted that providing affordable access to driving licences not only enhances individual independence but also contributes to safer roads across Sarawak.
The event showcased the collaborative efforts of several organisations. JPJ Sarawak, Pusat Khidmat DUN N.54 Pelawan and Akademi Memandu Suria Sibu Sdn Bhd worked together to ensure smooth implementation. Their partnership was instrumental in delivering the programme effectively to the community.
Also present at the ceremony were YBrs Tuan Mohd Faizal David bin Jemat, Deputy Director of JPJ Sarawak, and YBrs Tuan Jelapin Entalai, Head of JPJ Sibu Branch. Both officials expressed their appreciation for the cooperation extended by federal agencies, the Sarawak government and strategic partners.
JPJ Sarawak conveyed its gratitude to all parties involved, emphasising that the success of the programme was made possible through strong collaboration and shared commitment.
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to continuing initiatives that promote road safety and accessibility for all Sarawakians.
The Driving Licence Assistance Programme is part of broader efforts to empower communities by providing essential support that directly impacts daily life.
By ensuring that more individuals can obtain valid licences, the government hopes to encourage safer driving practices and reduce the number of unlicensed riders on the road.
This initiative is expected to have long-term benefits, including improved road safety awareness, better compliance with traffic regulations and enhanced mobility for participants.
It also reflects the state’s wider vision of uplifting communities through targeted programmes that address practical needs.
