LONG BANGA – The Peluan River Bridge, measuring 43 metres in length, has been fully completed and is now open to the public, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s rural infrastructure development.
The bridge, located in the Baram hinterland, is part of a wider programme to replace ageing and unsafe structures with modern iron bridges. The initiative, led by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak), falls under the Rural Bridge Transformation Programme (RBTP), which aims to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity for communities living in remote areas.
During a recent inspection, JKR Sarawak Director Adj Prof Ir Ts Dr Cassidy Morris highlighted that the Peluan Bridge completion complements other ongoing projects in Baram, including the Sungai Merawa Bridge, Sungai Balong Bridge, and the Long Banga-Bario route. These projects collectively enhance the resilience of the road network and provide more reliable transport links for residents.
The replacement of dilapidated wooden bridges with iron structures is expected to reduce travel risks, particularly during heavy rainfall, while ensuring smoother mobility for vehicles and pedestrians. Officials explained that the new bridges are designed to withstand higher traffic loads and provide long-term durability.
Local communities have welcomed the completion of the Peluan Bridge, noting that it will ease travel difficulties and improve access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and trade. Improved connectivity is also expected to boost economic activities in the interior, allowing rural residents to engage more effectively with markets and development opportunities.
Infrastructure experts emphasise that rural bridge projects are vital for reducing isolation in Sarawak’s interior. By ensuring safe and efficient transport routes, the government is not only addressing immediate mobility needs but also laying the foundation for sustainable growth in rural districts.
The empowerment visits conducted by JKR Sarawak serve as a monitoring mechanism to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet technical specifications. The Peluan Bridge’s completion demonstrates the department’s commitment to accountability and its role in driving rural transformation.
As part of Sarawak’s broader development agenda, the RBTP continues to prioritise infrastructure upgrades in remote areas. The Peluan Bridge stands as a symbol of progress, reflecting the state’s determination to improve the quality of life for its rural population while strengthening the overall communication network.
