KUCHING, April 26 — The PET WALK 2.0 community event has recorded strong participation and meaningful achievements, reflecting a growing culture of compassion and responsible pet ownership in Sarawak.
Held in a lively and welcoming atmosphere, the programme brought together pet owners, families, and animal lovers from across the community. Participants were seen enjoying the walk alongside their pets, creating a positive environment filled with energy, smiles, and shared purpose. The event not only promoted a healthy lifestyle but also highlighted the importance of animal welfare and public awareness on rabies.
Organisers emphasised that PET WALK 2.0 goes beyond a recreational activity. It serves as a platform to educate the public on responsible pet care while strengthening community bonds. In today’s fast-moving society, pets continue to play a vital role in supporting emotional and mental well-being by offering comfort, reducing stress, and easing loneliness. As such, the responsibility to care for them properly reflects the values of a compassionate society.
This year’s event recorded a significant increase in participation, with 1,052 attendees compared to 802 in 2025, marking a 30.68 per cent rise. The number of pets also grew from 150 to 175, an increase of 16.67 per cent. These figures indicate a steady rise in public awareness and engagement in animal welfare initiatives within the community.
A key highlight of the programme was the successful fundraising effort, which raised RM12,500 for the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). The funds will support the organisation’s ongoing operational efforts in caring for animals in need. The contribution reflects the generosity of participants and the community’s shared commitment to animal welfare.
Looking ahead, organisers announced plans to expand the event further. PET WALK 3.0, scheduled for 2027, will be upgraded into a PET Carnival Day. The larger-scale event is expected to feature a wider range of activities, educational programmes, and interactive experiences for pet owners and the public, marking a new chapter in community engagement.
The success of PET WALK 2.0 was also supported by strong media promotion, with Sarawak Daily and Team Kuching King playing a key role in reaching a wider audience through online platforms.
As the event concluded, participants were reminded that a caring society is measured not only by human interaction but also by how animals are treated. The continued growth of PET WALK signals a positive step towards building a more responsible, united, and compassionate community.
