KUCHING: Kuching’s iconic pet-friendly running event, Pet Walk, is set to make a grand return with its 2026 edition on April 26, introducing a new five-kilometre category for the first time.
The event, organised by the Kuching Progressive Community Organisation (PKPK) in collaboration with the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), follows the success of the 2025 edition, which saw 850 participants and 159 pets taking part.
“After the incredible response to Pet Walk 2025, we aim to make it even bigger and more memorable, not just for Kuching, but as one of Malaysia’s largest pet-friendly runs,” said PKPK Chairman Ryan Jee Kouk Hiong in a statement today. He added that the new five-kilometre category was introduced in response to feedback from participants seeking a greater challenge, while the three-kilometre route from last year will also remain.
Ryan emphasised that the event goes beyond running and walking, serving as a platform to promote community awareness about health, animal care, and responsible pet ownership.
Registration for Pet Walk 2026 Fees range from RM30 to RM55 depending on the category and whether participants choose to join with or without a pet. Registration will close on March 23, 2026.
The event is supported by Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Sarawak Veterinary Department, City Jogger’s Club, Malaysian Red Crescent Kuching Branch, and RELA. Main sponsorship comes from International Marketing Management Sdn. Bhd.
SSPCA President Datin Sri Dona Drury-Wee highlighted the focus on health, safety, and rabies awareness. “Participants bringing pets must ensure their animals are vaccinated against rabies and are fit to interact with the public. Rabies remains a serious threat. Vaccinating your pet protects both them and your family,” she said, adding that even minor scratches should be treated seriously.
Pet Walk 2026 is targeting between 1,000 and 2,500 participants. Attendees can also enjoy side activities including an animal vaccination booth, rabies awareness exhibition, the Most Creative Animal and Owner Photo Competition, lucky draws, and pet photography sessions. The event coincides with World Stray Animal Day, symbolising a commitment to animal welfare and community education.
