LAWAS – A total of 350 families and 325 students in Lawas received welfare assistance from PETRONAS, marking a significant contribution to community well-being during the Christmas season and ahead of the 2025 school year.
The aid handover ceremony, held at Hotel Seri Malaysia, Lawas on Friday, was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who praised PETRONAS for its active role in supporting social development across Sarawak.
“The selection of Lawas as the location for the Christmas food basket and school supplies is in line with efforts to empower the community more holistically,” he said.
Awang Tengah emphasised that social inclusion is a key pillar of the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to ensure that marginalised groups, particularly the B40 community and rural residents, are not left behind.
He described PETRONAS’ initiative as a strong example of how corporate organisations can drive inclusive and sustainable development, creating long-term benefits for the people.
He added that the assistance would help ease the burden of families during the festive season and enable students to prepare for the upcoming school session with confidence.
The programme was implemented through close collaboration between PETRONAS, the Lawas Division Social Welfare Department, and the Sarawak State Education Department, Lawas District, ensuring that aid reached the intended recipients directly.
This integrated approach strengthened the social support network while reinforcing strategic ties between the government and the corporate sector.
The initiative also highlighted PETRONAS’ ongoing commitment to rural communities, reflecting its role in fostering inclusivity and togetherness.
By providing both festive support and educational assistance, the programme contributed to uplifting families and empowering students in Lawas.
The event once again demonstrated how partnerships between government agencies and corporate organisations can deliver sustainable value to communities, aligning with Sarawak’s broader development goals under PCDS 2030.
