KUCHING — An inspiring pair of internationally celebrated pianists—Esme Wong from Sarawak and her husband, American pianist Jacob Nydegger—returned from Germany to perform at the “Echoes of Love” concert held at St. Peter’s Church last Tuesday. The event drew a crowd of music lovers who were treated to a night of breathtaking classical piano performance.

Homegrown Talent Shines on World Stage
Sarawakian-born Esme Wong, who grew up in Kuching, has made a name for herself on prestigious stages around the world. Her performances have reached far beyond Malaysia, including world-renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Dresden Kulturpalast in Germany, and the Winspear Opera House in Dallas. Currently based in Dresden, Germany, Esme works as an opera coach at Landesbühnen Sachsen and continues to inspire with her deep passion for classical music and global community work.
A former member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra at just 16, Esme received a global music scholarship that took her to Italy, where she studied under the famous Trio di Trieste. She later earned her degrees in music from Luther College and the University of North Texas.
Esme has also been deeply involved in international outreach, using her music to bring healing and hope to communities in Cambodia, the Philippines, and Bosnia. Her journey is a proud moment for Sarawakians and a true example of talent with heart.
A Pianist with Global Prestige
Joining Esme on stage was her husband, Jacob Nydegger, a highly acclaimed American pianist. Known for his “formidable technical skill” and “smooth, elegant power,” Jacob has performed in legendary venues like London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Dresden Frauenkirche. He has also worked with top orchestras in both the United States and Germany.
Jacob’s accolades include 1st Prize at the Petroff Piano Competition in 2022, as well as awards from international competitions such as Grand Prize Virtuoso and the William Knabe International Piano Competition. His recordings have been featured on Spotify’s Classical New Releases, and his upcoming album will showcase music by Dutch composer Leo Samama.
A graduate of the University of North Texas and a fellow at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden, Jacob brings years of experience in solo and chamber music to every performance.
A Night to Remember
The “Echoes of Love” concert wasn’t just about showcasing talent—it was a celebration of music’s power to connect people across borders. For many in the audience, seeing a local-born talent like Esme Wong share the stage with a globally respected pianist was both emotional and inspiring.
It’s a proud reminder for Sarawak—and Malaysia—that we have world-class performers among us, making waves on the global stage.
