KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today visited Brickfields to observe the preparations for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations, showing his support for the Indian community and Malaysia’s multicultural spirit.
Arriving at around 4pm, Anwar was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The prime minister spent approximately 30 minutes at Madras Bakery enjoying afternoon tea with members of the Indian community before embarking on a walkabout at the Little India bazaar in Brickfields.
During his walkabout, Anwar visited several shops and stalls, interacting warmly with traders and visitors alike. Many took the opportunity to shake hands with him, snap selfies, and record memorable videos with the prime minister.
One trader, 30-year-old R. Tashwindren, described the moment as “sweet and unforgettable.” He said, “He was friendly and never acted awkwardly with the public. We feel appreciated when the leader himself comes down to observe our Deepavali preparations.”
Visitors also welcomed Anwar’s personal involvement. K. Meena, 32, remarked, “The prime minister’s presence shows that the government cares for all races in the country. Deepavali is not just for the Indian community, but a time for everyone to celebrate the spirit of togetherness. I am very happy he came personally.”
This visit highlights the government’s effort to engage with communities during important cultural festivals. Anwar’s walkabout in Brickfields demonstrates the emphasis on inclusivity, unity, and recognition of Malaysia’s diverse heritage.
This year, Deepavali falls on Monday, October 20, with celebrations across the country. Communities are preparing traditional decorations, sweets, and cultural events to mark the occasion. The prime minister’s visit serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and supporting all cultural traditions in Malaysia.
