PM Anwar: Sabah Is the Heart of Malaysia’s Strength

Kota Kinabalu – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to Sabah, declaring the state as “the heart of Malaysia’s strength” and pledging the highest development allocation under the MADANI government.

Speaking during a walkabout at the Gaya Street Sunday Market in Kota Kinabalu, Anwar emphasised that development initiatives in Sabah are not about political favour or applause, but about recognising the rights of the people.

“In every step we take, the principle is clear: elevate the dignity of the people,” he said, stressing that improvements to roads, rural clinics, schools and universities are fundamental entitlements.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the federal government has allocated RM17 billion to Sabah in 2025, surpassing the RM10 billion in revenue collected from the state last year.

He noted that this allocation reflects the government’s determination to ensure progress benefits the majority rather than a select few in power.

Anwar’s remarks came amid renewed public debate over Sabah’s claim to a 40 per cent share of federal revenue, as stipulated under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). During his market visit, he was questioned by a member of the public about the issue.

While acknowledging the concerns, Anwar pointed to the government’s financial commitment, noting that the allocation already exceeds the state’s revenue contribution.

His senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, reinforced the Prime Minister’s pledge, stating that Anwar remains committed to resolving Sabah’s long-standing “AJK” issues air (water), jalan (roads), and karan (electricity).

Major projects such as the Ulu Padas Dam and the Pan Borneo Highway are central to addressing these challenges.

Anwar also underscored his personal dedication to Sabah’s future, declaring: “As long as I am given breath, I will continue to work for Sabah and Malaysia.” He added that while the government is not perfect, it is working hard to defend the rights and dignity of the people.

Observers note that the increased allocation to Sabah reflects the MADANI government’s broader strategy of inclusive development, positioning the state not as marginalised but as integral to Malaysia’s national identity and economic strength.
