MEROTAI – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that Malaysia’s strength lies in the unity of its diverse communities, stressing that inclusive leadership is essential to ensure equitable development across the nation.
Addressing the public in Merotai, Anwar highlighted that unity among different races and tribes remains the foundation of national progress.
He noted that the government’s three years in office have been marked by policies designed to safeguard the rights and needs of citizens, with particular attention given to Sabah.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) as a guiding framework for delivering meaningful change in Sabah.
He explained that while challenges remain, the administration has taken concrete steps to address long-standing grievances and ensure that East Malaysia receives fair treatment in national development.
“Is everything finished? Of course not,” Anwar remarked, acknowledging that the journey towards justice and equality is ongoing.
He stressed that the government’s commitment is to continue strengthening cooperation between the Peninsula, Sabah, and Sarawak, so that communities which have been marginalised for decades begin to see tangible improvements.
Anwar’s comments reflect broader efforts by the unity government to reinforce federal-state collaboration.
In recent months, Putrajaya has announced allocations for infrastructure, education, and healthcare projects in Sabah, signalling its determination to close developmental gaps.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly emphasised that Sabah and Sarawak must not be left behind, and that their citizens deserve equal access to opportunities enjoyed in the Peninsula.
Observers note that MA63 has become a central reference point in negotiations between the federal government and East Malaysian leaders.
The agreement, signed at the formation of Malaysia, outlines the rights and autonomy of Sabah and Sarawak.
Anwar has pledged to honour its provisions, framing them as essential to restoring trust and ensuring balanced growth.
The Merotai event also reinforced Anwar’s message of unity. He urged Malaysians to recognise that national strength is built on diversity, and that cooperation across regions is vital for long-term stability.
His remarks come as Sabah prepares for its state election, where issues of development, autonomy, and federal support are expected to dominate public discourse.
By emphasising inclusivity and fairness, Anwar positioned his administration as one committed to bridging divides and delivering results.
He concluded by stressing that the government’s mission is not only to correct past injustices but also to build a future where Sabah and Sarawak stand as equal partners in Malaysia’s progress.
