KUCHING – Police in Kuching have confirmed the arrest of an elderly man in connection with a theft incident reported in the Galacity area earlier this week.
According to district police, the case began on 18 May when a male complainant lodged a report about the loss of his wallet, which contained cash and personal documents.
The incident occurred in the busy Galacity commercial zone, a location known for its high foot traffic and retail activity.
Following intelligence gathering and swift action, officers moved in on 19 May at approximately 11.45 am, detaining an 81-year-old local man.
Several items were seized during the operation to assist with ongoing investigations. Authorities noted that the suspect had no prior criminal record, and initial urine screening returned negative results for drug use.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which covers theft offences. Convictions under this section can result in imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both.
Police emphasised that investigations are continuing and that all evidence will be carefully reviewed before charges are finalised.
District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu highlighted the importance of public vigilance in preventing similar incidents.
He urged residents and visitors to remain cautious with their belongings, particularly in crowded areas, and to avoid leaving valuables unattended.
His advice reflects broader crime prevention strategies often promoted in urban centres across Sarawak, where theft cases are among the more common offences reported.
While Kuching generally maintains a reputation as one of Sarawak’s safer cities, authorities have repeatedly reminded the public that opportunistic crimes can occur in commercial districts.
The Galacity area, with its mix of shops, eateries, and entertainment outlets, has been identified as a location where residents should exercise extra care.
Police have also reassured the community that patrols and surveillance will continue to be strengthened in key areas.
The recent arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of rapid response measures and intelligence-led policing, which remain central to maintaining public safety in the district.
The incident serves as a reminder that even seemingly minor thefts can have significant consequences for victims, particularly when personal documents are involved.
Authorities continue to encourage prompt reporting of suspicious activity, stressing that community cooperation is vital in reducing crime rates.
