KUCHING: Police have successfully arrested a local man following a dramatic chase along Jalan Kuching–Serian that recently went viral on social media, drawing widespread public attention and concern.
The incident unfolded on January 31, 2026, at around 1.30 pm, when officers from the Kuching District Police Headquarters confirmed the arrest of a 35-year-old local man at Taman Berjaya, Batu 4½, Jalan Penrissen. The suspect was wanted in connection with a house break-in case reported on January 30, 2026, at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, Kuching, as well as several motorcycle theft cases around the city.
According to initial investigations, police had been tracking a white Perodua Viva believed to be used by the suspect. The vehicle was spotted along Jalan Kuching–Serian heading towards Kuching. When police attempted to stop the car, the suspect refused to cooperate and instead sped away, triggering a chase that alarmed other road users.
During the pursuit, the suspect drove recklessly and rammed into several vehicles on a flyover in an apparent attempt to escape. In the course of the operation, one police officer sustained injuries to several parts of his body while trying to restrain the suspect. The injured officer was later reported to be in stable condition.
The chase ended when the suspect was finally overpowered and arrested by the Kuching Criminal Investigation Department operations team. Subsequent urine screening revealed that the suspect tested positive for drugs. Further background checks also showed that he has 20 previous criminal records, indicating a long history of involvement in criminal activities.
Police confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for house trespass with intent to commit theft, an offence that carries a penalty of up to 14 years’ imprisonment, as well as a fine or whipping. Investigations are also being conducted under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties, which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu urged members of the public who may have additional information related to the case to come forward and assist the investigation. Those with relevant details are encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Frankie, at 019-8462132 or to approach the nearest police station.
