KUCHING – Sarawak is advancing its economic transformation agenda by positioning Tanjung Embang as a new low-carbon gateway, anchored by the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub (KLCH). The initiative is designed to strengthen the state’s role in regional trade, logistics, and sustainable industrial growth.
The KLCH development forms part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which leverages natural gas resources to drive high-value activities across four strategic hubs: Kuching, Bintulu, Samalaju, and Miri. This roadmap is intended to diversify Sarawak’s economy and ensure competitiveness in the global market.
The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, in his winding-up speech, emphasised that the KLCH project will focus on sustainability, innovation, and high-value investments. He noted that the hub is expected to act as a catalyst for economic expansion in southern Sarawak.
The hub will be supported by natural gas resources from Western Sarawak, providing reliable lower-carbon energy for industries such as advanced manufacturing, food processing, digital ventures, and circular economy activities. This approach is aligned with Sarawak’s ambition to become a developed state by 2030.
International interest in KLCH has already been established, with partnerships formed with China Jiangsu International and the Sumitomo Corporation. Interest from European stakeholders further demonstrates confidence in the long-term potential of the project.
Adding to its digital significance, the Kuching AI Data Campus will be developed within Tanjung Embang. The campus, spanning 405 hectares, is envisioned as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s AI Grid ecosystem. It will feature dedicated energy and water supplies tailored for hyperscale data centres, AI computing, and digital interconnectivity nodes.
The project will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, beginning with an initial phase covering 120 hectares. The facility is expected to serve as the backbone of Sarawak’s digital future, enabling sovereign AI compute infrastructure and supporting the growth of high-technology industries.
Tanjung Embang’s strategic location and integrated infrastructure will position it as a competitive low-carbon gateway for trade, logistics, and green industries. This development complements Sarawak’s existing industrial hubs in Bintulu and Samalaju, reinforcing the state’s role as a regional leader in sustainable growth.
By combining energy innovation with digital transformation, Sarawak is laying the foundation for a resilient and future-ready economy. The KLCH and AI Data Campus are expected to attract global investment, create new opportunities for local talent, and strengthen Sarawak’s standing in the international marketplace.
