KUCHING – The Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, presided over a formal ceremony on Wednesday marking the presentation of RM1 million in zakat contributions by the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to the Sarawak Baitulmal Fund for the year 2025.

The event, held at the Premier’s Office, underscored the commitment of government-linked agencies to support community welfare initiatives through religious obligations.

The contribution was handed over by BDA General Manager, Datu Haji Muhamad Yakup Kari, to the Sarawak Baitulmal Fund, represented by Datuk Haji Misnu Haji Taha, President of the Sarawak Islamic Council.

The Premier, who also serves as Chairman of the BDA, was joined by Deputy Chairman Dato Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, members of the BDA Board, and senior management officials.

Their presence highlighted the collective responsibility of leadership in ensuring that zakat contributions are channelled effectively to benefit the wider community.

Zakat, one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, plays a crucial role in redistributing wealth and supporting those in need.

In Sarawak, the Baitulmal Fund manages these contributions, directing them towards programmes that uplift underprivileged groups, strengthen educational opportunities, and enhance social welfare.

The RM1 million contribution reflects BDA’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility and its recognition of the importance of faith-based initiatives in fostering community development.

The ceremony also reinforced the collaborative relationship between state institutions and religious councils in ensuring that resources are utilised transparently and responsibly.

Speaking at the event, officials emphasised that such contributions are not only a fulfilment of religious duty but also a demonstration of solidarity with the people of Sarawak.

The Premier’s attendance further underscored the government’s support for initiatives that promote inclusivity and social balance.

The Sarawak Baitulmal Fund has consistently played a vital role in managing zakat and other charitable resources, ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need.

With contributions such as this, the Fund is better positioned to expand its programmes and strengthen its impact across the state.

This latest handover adds to a growing record of zakat contributions from government agencies and private organisations, reflecting a broader commitment to community welfare and sustainable development in Sarawak.
