MIRI – Plans have been proposed to upgrade the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Operations Centre in Sibu to strengthen disaster response and improve service delivery.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak), Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud, announced the proposal during a press conference following his visit to the Miri District Operations Control Centre on Thursday.
He explained that the move was necessary given the frequency of disaster risks in the region, including floods and fires.
He emphasised that APM plays a vital role in supporting communities during emergencies, and upgrading facilities would ensure that the agency continues to operate effectively.
“APM’s approach of trying to save every life regardless of location is very commendable, because every individual saved has the potential to become an important asset to the country in the future,” he said.
The minister also highlighted the importance of volunteer involvement and community awareness programmes, particularly in high-risk areas.
He noted that training initiatives would enable villagers to take basic early action while waiting for rescue teams to arrive.
Commenting on challenges faced in Sabah and Sarawak, Mustapha pointed out that vast geography and infrastructure limitations often affect operations.
However, he assured that continuous efforts are being made to maximise the use of existing assets while seeking additional resources.
He further stressed the importance of diesel subsidies for residents in both states, explaining that access to remote areas often requires four-wheel drive vehicles.
He expressed appreciation to the MADANI Government for its commitment to supporting these needs.
His visit began at 8 am, where he was welcomed by Sarawak State Civil Defence Director, YS TPj. (PA) Mohtar Samat, and Miri District Civil Defence Officer, Maj (PA) Bonnie Madisun. The programme included a briefing session on current operations and challenges faced by APM Sarawak, particularly in disaster management.
The proposal to upgrade the Sibu centre reflects broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness across Sarawak, ensuring that communities remain protected and emergency services are delivered efficiently.
