BINTULU, 11 April 2025 – A telecommunications tower in Bintulu narrowly escaped serious damage today thanks to the swift and efficient efforts of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). The fire broke out in the structure earlier this afternoon, but was successfully extinguished before it could spread further.

The Sarawak Operations Centre (PGO) received an emergency alert at 3.13pm, prompting the immediate deployment of two firefighting teams – one from the Kidurong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and another from Bintulu BBP.

Upon arrival, firefighters were faced with a challenging route to the site. The narrow, uneven and hilly terrain prevented their fire engines from reaching the tower. However, showing quick thinking, the team utilised a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle belonging to the telecommunications company to navigate the difficult path.

“Upon arriving at the location, the fire brigade found a fire in the tower structure,” the PGO reported.

Despite the obstacles, the team managed to control and put out the fire using just two fire extinguishers – an impressive feat that highlights their preparedness and training. The flames were successfully subdued in under an hour.

The operation was officially concluded by 4.07pm.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the damage was minimal, thanks to the fast response and teamwork of JBPM. Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently ongoing.

This incident underscores the importance of emergency readiness, especially in remote areas where access is limited. The quick and resourceful action of the fire brigade not only protected vital infrastructure but also ensured public safety.
