KUALA RAJANG – The 4th Rajang Coastal Challenge Fishing Competition returned with much fanfare this weekend, drawing enthusiastic participation from anglers across Rajang, Belawai, Jerijih, and Sarikei.
Held at the picturesque Kampung Rajang Jetty, the event was organised by the Bersatu Anak Rajang Cooperative and featured two main categories: jetty fishing and offshore boat fishing.
The jetty category, held on 2nd August, saw 78 eager participants casting their lines, while the boat category on 3rd August welcomed 48 competitors braving the open waters. The official launch of the boat category was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, who is also the Kuala Rajang assemblyman (ADUN).
Despite its modest scale, the event was vibrant with side activities including a karaoke contest, children’s colouring competition, cooking showdown, and lucky ticket draw — all adding to the festive village atmosphere.
Organisers noted that the competition not only strengthens social ties among local communities, but also allows participants to savour the tranquillity of Kampung Rajang, reconnect with old friends, and embrace traditional village life.
More than just a fishing contest, the event also aims to spotlight Kampung Rajang’s rich marine biodiversity and its potential as a grassroots tourism destination.
Also present during the event were local leaders and the Chairman of the Udin Bujang Competition, reinforcing strong community involvement and support.
