Red Light Tragedy: Bintulu Motorcyclist Killed in Late-Night Crash

BINTULU, 25 April – A tragic traffic accident claimed the life of a local man in his 30s after he allegedly ran a red light and collided with another motorcyclist at the busy Paragon traffic light intersection late last night.

The victim, who was riding a Honda motorcycle, was believed to have been heading from Pasar Lama Bintulu towards Jalan Sultan Iskandar when the incident occurred around 11.49pm. The other motorcyclist, also a local man in his 30s, was riding a Yamaha RXZ coming from the Parkcity direction towards Kampung Baru.

Bintulu District Police Chief, Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali, confirmed that early investigations and dashcam footage from a nearby road user revealed the Honda rider had run a red light just before the fatal crash.

“The Honda motorcycle entered the intersection against the red light, leading to a collision with the Yamaha RXZ, which was moving along a green light,” he said in a statement today.

Emergency responders rushed both riders to Bintulu Hospital for immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, the Honda rider succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1.00am while being treated in the Red Zone.

The incident is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Superintendent Nixon urged witnesses or anyone with information regarding the case to come forward. Members of the public can reach out to Investigating Officer, Inspector Lydia Allan, at the Bintulu Traffic Station via 086-338575, or contact the Bintulu IPD Operations Room at 086-318304.

This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the deadly consequences of ignoring traffic signals.
