MIRI, Nov 9: Police seized 10 motorcycles and issued 46 summonses during a Road Thug Operation conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters between 11.00 pm on November 8 and 4.00 am on November 9.
The late-night operation, which took place around Miri City, Piasau, and the Miri Bypass Road, targeted reckless riders and illegal motorcycle modifications often linked to road thug activities.
According to police, a total of 23 individuals — 20 men and three women — were inspected along with 21 motorcycles. The checks revealed multiple traffic offences, including riding without a licence, expired licences, illegal vehicle modifications, modified exhaust systems, missing side mirrors, absence or improper registration numbers, and brake defects.
During the operation, 10 motorcycles were detained under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further inspection. The police emphasised that these enforcement efforts are part of ongoing measures to curb illegal street gatherings and noise disturbances caused by modified motorcycles.
The Miri police have pledged to continue such operations from time to time, especially targeting those who engage in illegal racing or cause nuisance on public roads.
A police spokesperson reminded all motorists to obey road safety regulations and avoid modifying their vehicles beyond legal limits. “Do not participate in any form of street gang activity or gather by the roadside to obstruct traffic and disturb public peace. Careless driving or riding endangers not only yourself but also other road users,” the statement said.
Authorities also urged the public to cooperate by providing information on illegal racing or group gatherings that threaten public safety and order in the city.
