MIRI – The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has reported steady progress on the Upgrading of Former Balak Roads Project, which aims to improve access to Ba Mubui and Long Tungan.
The project involves the construction of two major access roads: a 6.1-kilometre road to Ba Mubui and an 8.6-kilometre road to Long Tungan.
In addition, two bridges are being built to enhance connectivity and safety – the Sungai Selaan Bridge in Ba Mubui and the Sungai Batu Buan Bridge in Long Tungan.
As of 8 March 2026, the overall implementation status across the four scopes has reached 69.46% completion, reflecting significant progress towards the project’s objectives.
The initiative is part of Sarawak’s broader rural infrastructure development plan, designed to provide better access for communities in remote areas.
Improved road and bridge networks are expected to facilitate transportation, boost local economic activities, and enhance the delivery of essential services.
Residents in Ba Mubui and Long Tungan have long relied on former logging roads, which are often difficult to navigate, especially during rainy seasons.
The upgrade will provide safer and more reliable routes, reducing travel time and improving connectivity with Miri and other parts of Sarawak.
Authorities have emphasised that the project is not only about infrastructure but also about uplifting rural communities.
By ensuring better access, the government aims to support education, healthcare, and trade opportunities for residents in these areas.
The completion of the Sungai Selaan and Sungai Batu Buan bridges will be particularly impactful, as they will replace older crossings that were prone to flooding and structural challenges. Once finished, the bridges will provide year-round accessibility, even during adverse weather conditions.
The project continues to be closely monitored by JKR Sarawak, with updates provided to ensure transparency and accountability.
The department has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the works on schedule, with safety and quality standards as top priorities.
