KUCHING: The long-awaited drainage and access road upgrading project in Kampung Stutong officially moved into its implementation stage following the handover of the Letter of Award under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2024.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman, YB Wilfred Yap, during his visit to the village on Thursday. The Letter of Award was presented to the appointed contractor, Pine Contract and Supplies, in the presence of officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID). The project has been approved with an allocation of RM300,000.
Known officially as Menaiktaraf dan Membina Sistem Perparitan dan Jalan-Jalan Akses Kampung Stutong, the project involves the upgrading and construction of a comprehensive drainage system as well as improvements to access roads within the village. The initiative aims to resolve long-standing problems faced by residents, including poor drainage, localised flooding, and unsafe or damaged access roads, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Speaking at the site, YB Wilfred Yap said the project reflects the Sarawak GPS Government’s commitment to people-focused development and practical solutions based on feedback from the ground. He noted that the project was the result of continuous engagement between his office and the residents of Kampung Stutong.
According to him, proper drainage and safe access roads are basic yet critical infrastructure needs. He stressed that improving these facilities would help reduce flood risks, improve daily mobility, and enhance overall safety for villagers, especially children and the elderly.
YB Wilfred Yap also highlighted the importance of strong coordination between the implementing agency, contractor, and local stakeholders. He reminded all parties involved to ensure that construction work is carried out according to approved specifications and within the agreed timeline.
He further urged the contractor to prioritise quality workmanship and take steps to minimise inconvenience to residents throughout the construction period. He added that his office would closely monitor the project’s progress to ensure it delivers real and lasting benefits to the community.
Residents who were present during the visit welcomed the project and expressed appreciation for the attention given to infrastructure issues that have affected the village for many years. Many shared that flooding and poor road conditions had disrupted daily activities and posed safety concerns during bad weather.
Once completed, the RTP 2024 drainage and access road upgrading project is expected to significantly improve water flow management and connectivity within Kampung Stutong. The improvements are seen as an important step towards creating a safer, more comfortable, and resilient living environment for the local community.
