KUCHING: Long-standing drainage and flash flood issues at Jalan Kuching Ranger Depot have been addressed following the successful completion of a Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) drainage upgrading project, officially witnessed on site by Kota Sentosa State Assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap.
The project site is located in front of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation at Wisma Lestari, an area that has for years experienced water overflow and flash floods, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. These problems previously caused inconvenience and safety concerns for road users, nearby premises and surrounding communities.
The drainage upgrading project was implemented with a total allocation of RM250,000 under the RTP initiative. Its main objective was to improve water flow, reduce flood risks and provide a safer and more comfortable environment for the public who use the road daily.
During his visit, YB Wilfred Yap expressed his appreciation to the Public Works Department (JKR), the appointed contractor and all parties involved in ensuring the project was completed according to the approved scope and technical requirements. He noted that the timely completion of the project demonstrated effective coordination between implementing agencies and a clear focus on addressing real issues faced by the people.
He said the drainage upgrade was a practical and necessary intervention, especially in an area prone to flash floods. According to him, improving drainage infrastructure not only helps to prevent road damage but also enhances overall public safety and convenience, particularly during the rainy season.
YB Wilfred Yap also explained that projects under the Rural Transformation Programme are carefully prioritised based on feedback from the ground and the actual needs of local communities. He stressed that infrastructure works with a direct impact on daily life and public safety are given priority to ensure public funds are used effectively.
He reaffirmed his commitment to continue working closely with implementing agencies such as JKR to make sure all RTP projects in the Kota Sentosa constituency are delivered efficiently and completed to a good standard. He added that continuous monitoring is important to ensure these projects provide long-term benefits and reduce recurring problems for residents.
The completion of the drainage upgrade at Jalan Kuching Ranger Depot is expected to significantly improve water management in the area and minimise the risk of flash floods during heavy rain. Residents and road users have welcomed the improvement, viewing it as a positive step towards better infrastructure and safer roads in Kuching.
