Sabah to Gain Big from RM2 Billion Petros Sustainable Energy Initiative

Sabah to Gain Big from RM2 Billion Petros Sustainable Energy Initiative

MIRI, Nov 30 – Sabah is poised to benefit significantly from a RM2 billion cross-border energy project spearheaded by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros). This transformative initiative aims to supply electricity to Sabah while powering northern Sarawak regions such as Miri, Limbang, and Lawas.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled this ambitious project during a site visit to Taman Ceria, Miri. The project, featuring a state-of-the-art combined-cycle energy generation system, is set to produce 500 MW of electricity through advanced gas and steam turbine technology.

“This initiative marks a major step towards sustainable energy,” said Abang Johari. “With hydrogen co-generation integrated, we’re introducing a low-carbon approach that aligns with global sustainability goals.”

Beyond powering homes and industries, the initiative is expected to drive economic growth in Sabah and Sarawak by bolstering industrial and service sectors. Highlighting Sarawak’s development plans, Abang Johari mentioned projects like a RM300 million deep-water port, airport upgrades, and a new Miri-Marudi bridge that will slash travel time to just 30 minutes.

Sarawak’s energy vision doesn’t stop here. By 2030, the state aims to generate 10 gigawatts (GW) of electricity and increase this to 15 GW by 2035. This energy will be sourced from a mix of gas, hydrogen, hydro, and solar power.

The project also positions Sarawak as a leader in low-carbon energy solutions within ASEAN. “Our goal is to supply 10,000 MW to meet the energy needs of ASEAN nations by 2030 while strengthening Sarawak’s economy,” he added.

Abang Johari also emphasized the substantial infrastructure investments being made to support this energy revolution, including transportation, ports, and airports.

This groundbreaking initiative is set to not only secure Sarawak’s energy future but also solidify its role as a regional energy powerhouse.
