LUNDU – A bush fire reported in Kampung Sungai Limo, Sampadi, Lundu, was brought under control by villagers before firefighters arrived at the scene on Friday afternoon.
The Lundu Fire and Rescue Station received the emergency call at 2.20pm on 21 August, with the incident location about 21 kilometres from the station.
Upon arrival, firefighters found that the reported fire involved vegetation and bushes in the area. Villagers had already extinguished the flames before the emergency response team reached the location.
Firefighters then carried out further precautionary work to reduce the risk of the fire starting again. One hose reel was used to wet the surrounding weeds with water drawn from the machinery tank.
The operation was focused on cooling the affected vegetation and checking the area for any remaining signs of fire. Firefighters took the precautionary measure because there was no water supply or open water source available at the location.
The affected area was estimated at about 0.5 acres. Although the flames had already been put out by the villagers, the response team continued to inspect and dampen the area to ensure conditions remained safe.
The absence of a nearby water source was one of the operational considerations at the site. Firefighters therefore relied on water carried by their machinery to complete the precautionary wetting operation.
After assessing the location and determining that the situation was safe and under control, the firefighting team concluded its response. The personnel subsequently left the site and returned to the Lundu Fire and Rescue Station.
The incident highlights the importance of prompt action when vegetation fires occur, particularly in areas where access to water may be limited. In this case, the villagers’ efforts had already stopped the fire before the arrival of the emergency responders.
Fire and Rescue personnel nevertheless carried out additional measures at the scene to minimise the possibility of re-ignition and to confirm that the area posed no immediate further threat.
No further fire-related action was reported after the site was assessed as safe and under control.
