SARATOK – A devastating fire swept through a two-storey semi-permanent longhouse, Rumah Panjang Jantun, along Jalan Krian here this afternoon, leaving about 80 percent of the 16-door structure in ruins.
A spokesman for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said the Saratok Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received an emergency call at 1.35 pm. In response, a Fire Rescue Vehicle (FRT), an Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) unit and seven personnel were deployed to the scene.
According to Operations Commander Nasir Drahman, firefighters arrived to find the flames already raging across the longhouse, which measured approximately 64 by 512 square feet.
“The fire was brought under control, but the longhouse was already 80 percent destroyed. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in this incident,” Nasir said.
He added that firefighters continued to carry out inspection and mop-up operations to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished. However, communication challenges were noted at the site, as the Government Integrated Radio Network (GIRN) coverage in the area was reported to be unsatisfactory.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing.
Longhouses, an iconic part of Sarawak’s cultural heritage, often house multiple families under one roof. Fire incidents in such structures not only result in the loss of property but also threaten the communal way of life that has been preserved for generations.
Authorities have reminded the public, particularly longhouse communities, to remain vigilant against fire risks and ensure that basic preventive measures are taken to safeguard lives and property.
