MIRI – Sarawak’s Director of Agriculture, Mr Dominic Anak Chunggat, carried out a series of engagements in Miri on 24 April 2026, beginning with a visit to the Perennial Variety Paddy Trial Plot in Kuala Baram.
The plot, managed by Borneoland Paddy Sdn Bhd, is part of an innovative initiative aimed at boosting productivity and enhancing Sarawak’s rice self-sufficiency rate.
The perennial paddy variety trial is seen as a strategic step towards strengthening food security in the state.
By exploring new cultivation methods, the Agriculture Department hopes to reduce reliance on external supply and ensure long-term sustainability in rice production.
The visit allowed the Director to review progress and assess the potential of the project in contributing to Sarawak’s agricultural resilience.
Later in the day, Mr Dominic attended the Miri Division Loyal Service Medal Presentation Ceremony, which was officiated by Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
The event recognised employees who have demonstrated dedication and excellence in their service to the community.
Among the recipients were Mr Stephen Anak Ulau, Assistant Agriculture Officer; Mr Niting @ Cherang Anak Hillary Tawan, Assistant Agriculture Officer; Mr Subeng Bin Jabis, Public Assistant; Mrs Nurrainie Binti Abdullah, Community Development Assistant; Mrs Sangit Anak Palei, Community Development Assistant; and Mrs Rogayah Binti Spawi, Administrative Assistant (P/O). Their recognition highlighted the vital role of civil servants in supporting Sarawak’s development agenda.
In addition to the ceremony, Mr Dominic visited the Sarawak Agriculture Department service booth and reviewed preparations by the department’s banquet committee for the upcoming Sarawakku Sayang Miri Programme.
His presence underscored the department’s ongoing commitment to strengthening agricultural development while appreciating the contributions of its workforce.
The day’s activities reflected the dual priorities of Sarawak’s Agriculture Department: advancing innovation in food production and honouring the dedication of its employees. Both initiatives are seen as essential to ensuring the state’s long-term growth and resilience.
Also present at the programme were YB Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Anak Utom, Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development; Mrs Chong Mui Sia, Miri Division Agriculture Officer; and staff from the Miri Division Agriculture Department.
Their attendance reinforced the collaborative spirit driving Sarawak’s agricultural and community development efforts.
