Sarawak Sets Bold Course With AI Economy to Drive New Growth

Sarawak Sets Bold Course With AI Economy to Drive New Growth

KUCHING — Sarawak is taking firm and confident steps toward building an economy powered by artificial intelligence (AI), positioning the state for long-term growth across multiple sectors. The move, driven by strong political will and a clear vision for the future, aims to transform Sarawak into a modern, technologically advanced economy that can compete on the global stage.

Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said his ambition is to shape Sarawak into a future-ready economy where business activities, industrial operations and public services are strengthened and elevated through AI-driven systems.

He explained that embracing AI will not only boost efficiency and productivity for businesses, but also create more high-value jobs for Sarawakians. The adoption of this technology, he said, will open new economic frontiers and reduce reliance on traditional, slow-growing sectors.

“My vision is to develop an AI-based economy where activities across sectors are powered by artificial intelligence to drive business, increase productivity, create high-value jobs, and unlock new avenues of growth,” he said during his winding-up speech at the Third Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

The Premier highlighted that the world is currently experiencing a rapid transformation under the AI revolution. Global demand for electricity has surged due to the growth of AI technologies and large-scale data centres. In this environment, he said, countries that can provide affordable, reliable and low-carbon energy at scale will stand in the strongest position to capitalise on this technological boom.

“Sarawak cannot and will not remain as a mere observer. Our involvement in the semiconductor and advanced electronics sector is deliberate and strategic. Through SMD Semiconductor, we are positioning ourselves as a technology producer, not just a user,” he said.

Abang Johari also reminded Malaysians that Sarawak has already taken major steps to establish itself in this field. Earlier this year, the state launched the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, a detailed plan that outlines how Sarawak will strengthen its capabilities in chip design, research and high-value manufacturing. This roadmap is expected to guide long-term investments and build local expertise that can attract global industry players.

With strong momentum, ample natural resources and a clear vision for the future, Sarawak is preparing itself to rise as a major regional player in AI-powered industries. The state government believes that by investing early and boldly, Sarawak can secure a competitive edge that will benefit generations to come. – UKAS
