Sarawak Secures Five More Golds in BGK 2025 Athletics

KUCHING – Sarawak’s athletics squad continued to deliver outstanding performances at the Borneo Games Kuching (BGK) 2025, securing five more gold medals in the morning session at the Sarawak Stadium, Petra Jaya, on Friday.

The first gold came through Adiana Irence Wong, who dominated the women’s 5,000-metre walk with an impressive time of 31:26.64. Her teammates, Cristalbell Deanna Bidin (33:48.09) and Cristal Chung Ke Xin (36:57.94), completed a clean sweep by bagging silver and bronze respectively.

In the women’s hammer throw, national star Grace Wong Xiu Mei once again proved her class by hurling 57.26 metres to win gold. Fellow Sarawak athletes Yoyo Wong Zhi Yao (40.04m) and Liee Woon Ping (38.45m) followed closely, securing silver and bronze.

Sarawak’s third gold medal of the session came from the women’s 100-metre hurdles. Syaricag Nur Alisya Syed Zafirna clocked 15.29 seconds to finish first, while teammate Darellyn Denisa Deng Dannis grabbed silver with 15.43 seconds. East Kalimantan’s Dilfy Rizky Fakhira settled for bronze at 15.98 seconds.

The men’s 110-metre hurdles added another gold for Sarawak through Elvin Yap Zhi Xian, who crossed the finish line in 14.52 seconds. Sabah athletes Muhammad Ilham Jaffar (14.67s) and Muhamad Fazrul Nizam Ajah (14.69s) took silver and bronze respectively.

The final gold of the morning session came from the men’s 4×400 metre relay. The Sarawak quartet of Muhammad Qarliff Kuyt Abdullah, Ashven Austin Adrien, Yusry Muhammad Saifullah, and Mosmilian Astute Malam clocked 3:19.62 to outpace the competition. Their teammates won silver with 3:27.89, while Labuan finished third in 3:38.46.

By the end of the morning events, Sarawak recorded an impressive tally of five golds, six silvers, and five bronzes, setting a strong foundation before the athletics competition continues in the afternoon session. – UKAS
