KUCHING — Sarawak has taken a significant step in strengthening Malaysia’s national food supply chain with its first-ever shipment of live pigs to Peninsular Malaysia, with Selangor being the initial recipient.
The milestone shipment, comprising 800 live pigs, is part of a strategic logistics initiative led by Green Breeder Sdn Bhd in collaboration with various partners and approved by both the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Malaysia and DVS Sarawak.
“This event marks an important milestone as we assess logistics and testing protocols,” said Sarawak’s Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Rural Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, during the official loading programme held in Kuching on Friday.
He added that Sarawak plans to scale up exports to 2,000 pigs weekly, with expansion to additional states such as Penang and Johor in the pipeline.
“The weekly certification and export permits from DVS Sarawak will generate an estimated RM8,000 in revenue for the Sarawak Government,” he said.
Dr Rundi also noted that Green Breeder Sdn Bhd currently exports 2,000 live pigs weekly to Singapore, with plans underway to increase the volume further.
This initiative aligns with Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to position the state as a net food exporter within the next five years.
“We take great pride in this achievement. It moves us closer to realising our vision of becoming a food-exporting powerhouse while contributing to the national food security and trade resilience agenda,” he said.
Dr Rundi extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, DVS Malaysia, and DVS Selangor for supporting the launch of this new livestock supply chain route from East Malaysia.
