Sarawak Boosts Sports Tourism Through Tournaments, Eyes 2027 SEA Games

KUCHING – Organizing regional sports tournaments is proving to be a catalyst for both athletic excellence and economic growth in Sarawak, according to Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato’ Gerald Rentap Jabu.

Speaking after a visit to Megalanes Sarawak in Batu Kawa on Friday, he noted that such events draw athletes and their families from across the region, injecting fresh spending into local hospitality, transport, and retail sectors.

“This isn’t just about medals, it’s about sustainable tourism and community engagement,” he said.

The visit, arranged by the Sarawak Amateur Bowling Association (ABAS), aimed to assess bowling facilities and long-term development plans.

Dato’ Gerald’s presence underscored the state government’s active commitment to nurturing niche sports, with bowling emerging as a key focus area for grassroots investment.

He emphasized that consistent tournament scheduling builds competitive readiness ahead of major events like the 2027 SEA Games. “Every local match lays the foundation for national success,” he added.

During his inspection, the deputy minister engaged with venue staff, reviewed operational standards, and encouraged continued upgrades to meet international benchmarks.

His remarks signalled a broader strategy to position Sarawak not only as a participant in regional games but as a trusted host and training hub.
