Sarawak Civil Service Drives State’s Transformation Towards 2030

KUCHING – The Sarawak Government Service has once again been recognised as the backbone of the state’s transformation journey, with its discipline, efficiency and commitment credited for steering Sarawak towards its 2030 development vision.

Speaking at the 2025 Government Service Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg highlighted the civil service’s role in achieving historic milestones.

Among the achievements noted was Sarawak’s highest revenue in history, estimated at RM14.2 billion in 2024, alongside the World Bank’s recognition of Sarawak as a high-income economy – seven years ahead of the 2030 target.

The Premier attributed this success to strong fiscal management, disciplined planning and effective collaboration between the state and federal governments.

“This success reflects the strong fiscal management, disciplined planning, efficient working and stable work of the Sarawak Government Service,” he said, adding that the achievement marked a milestone in sustainable and inclusive development.

Abang Johari also pointed to Sarawak’s growing confidence in embracing innovation and modern technology under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

He cited the launch of the GaN chip by Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor as evidence of the state’s shift towards advanced technology industries, reducing reliance on commodity-based sectors.

“The ecosystem developed by the Sarawak Government Service has become the backbone of future industries, using semiconductor technology, digital economy, green energy and innovation as the new drivers of the transformation of the state’s economic structure,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Premier emphasised that the Second Phase of PCDS 2030, beginning next year, will further elevate the role of government services in ensuring Sarawak’s development vision is achieved in a timely and sustainable manner.

He outlined the state’s ambitious target of reaching a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of RM282 billion by 2030, with improvements in living standards across all regions.

“This requires the support of all offices, innovative approaches and disciplined leaders at every level of administration,” he added.

The event was attended by key figures including Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Sarawak State Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Asfia Awang Nasar, Chief Secretary of State Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Sarawak Government Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar, and other cabinet ministers, senior officials and civil servants from both state and federal levels.

The celebration underscored the civil service’s central role in Sarawak’s transformation, reinforcing its position as the driver of innovation, governance and sustainable growth towards 2030.
