Sarawak Coastal Ageing Programme Strengthens Community Support

SRI AMAN – Support for elderly communities in coastal areas took centre stage with the rollout of a new initiative under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP 2026) in the Simanggang constituency.

The programme was launched by Francis Harden Hollis, who stressed the need to improve both infrastructure and welfare support for ageing residents.

The effort responds directly to concerns raised by locals, including requests for better facilities and discussions around pension support.

As part of the launch, he visited Rumah Bericha Jumpu in Temiang Baru, Undop, where he met residents and reviewed nearby infrastructure.

One of the key sites was the Temiang Bridge, an important link for villages in the area. The visit showed how development plans tie closely to everyday needs in rural communities.

The programme leans heavily on cooperation at the grassroots level. Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), along with local agencies, are involved in planning, budgeting, and overseeing project implementation. Their role ensures that each project fits the specific needs of the community.

Francis Harden highlighted the value of this approach. When residents take part in planning, projects reflect real priorities on the ground. It also helps ensure funds are used where they make the most impact.

Beyond infrastructure, the initiative encourages stronger involvement from families, community leaders, and local groups.

Women’s Bureaus and grassroots organisations are expected to play an active role in supporting elderly residents and keeping programmes inclusive.

This coastal ageing initiative reflects a wider direction in Sarawak’s development plans. The focus stays on practical improvements, steady support, and making sure no group is left out.

In Sri Aman, the message is clear. Development is not only about new projects, it’s about making daily life safer, more comfortable, and more secure, especially for those who need support the most.
