KUCHING – The Sarawak Consumers’ Association (PPS) has expressed support for the state government’s recently announced assistance package aimed at easing the financial strain faced by households and small businesses.
The measures include an increase in the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS), a 25 percent reduction in electricity bills, and a 50 percent discount on rental charges for small traders.
According to PPS, these initiatives are expected to provide meaningful relief to consumers, particularly those in the low and middle-income groups, who continue to grapple with rising living costs.
The organisation highlighted that the SKAS adjustment would help families secure essential items such as food and household necessities without excessive financial stress.
The electricity bill discount, meanwhile, is seen as a way to lower monthly expenses, giving households more flexibility in managing their budgets.
PPS also noted that reduced rental fees for traders could indirectly benefit consumers by helping to keep the prices of goods and services stable.
Global economic uncertainty has contributed to higher costs in local markets, and PPS emphasised that these measures are timely in safeguarding consumer welfare.
The association urged residents to adopt prudent spending habits, prioritising essential purchases and avoiding wasteful expenditure.
PPS President, Dr Wynson Ong Teck Ping, described the government’s move as a proactive step. “This initiative announced is a very significant proactive step in helping consumers cope with the pressure of the cost of living.
PPS hopes that every assistance channelled can have a direct impact on the people and ensure that consumers are not further burdened by the increase in the price of goods and services,” he said.
The association also appealed to traders to act responsibly and refrain from raising prices unnecessarily.
PPS pointed out that subsidies, including fuel subsidies, remain in place and should help businesses manage operational costs.
The organisation stressed that unjustified price hikes undermine consumer protection and must be avoided.
In addition, PPS encouraged the public to play an active role in monitoring market prices. Any unreasonable increases can be reported directly to the association for further action.
PPS has called for stronger oversight of essential goods to ensure that the benefits of government assistance reach consumers effectively.
For complaints or enquiries, members of the public may contact PPS at 017-710 9299. The association reaffirmed its commitment to defending consumer rights and working with stakeholders to ensure that policies and initiatives deliver positive outcomes for the community.
“Consumer Power, United Voice” remains the guiding principle of PPS as it continues to advocate for fair treatment and sustainable consumer welfare in Sarawak.
