MIRI – The 62nd Sarawak Day celebration held at Miri City Stadium served not only as a tribute to Sarawak’s historic path to self-governance but also as a platform to reflect on the state’s rapid transformation and commitment to inclusivity.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin highlighted the importance of July 22, 1963—the day Sarawak began administering its own territory ahead of joining the Federation of Malaysia—as a pivotal moment that signifies the spirit of independence and determination among Sarawakians.
During his speech, Dato Sri Lee paid tribute to the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, whose decision to gazette July 22 as Sarawak Day played a vital role in fostering pride and unity among the people. “We cannot forget the great deed of the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem… to strengthen the self-esteem and identity of the people of Sarawak,” he remarked.
The event was graced by the presence of Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
In his remarks, the Minister-In-Charge of the 2025 Sarawak Day Celebration emphasised the state’s strategic advancement under the leadership of Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg. To date, Sarawak has rolled out 137 strategic initiatives covering education, digital transformation, green economy, public welfare, and rural development.
Key programmes such as the Post-Natal Assistance (BIB), Free Tertiary Education Sarawak (FTES), Senior Citizens Health Benefits Scheme (SCHB), and the Kenyalang Gold Card reflect the state government’s inclusive policies, ensuring no one is left behind.
Additionally, Premier Abang Zohari’s international recognition for championing green technology and hydrogen-based innovation highlights Sarawak’s forward-thinking agenda. A notable milestone announced during the ceremony was the Pulau Melayu-Marina Bay Bridge project, a transformative infrastructure initiative that was well-received by Miri residents.
Sarawak Day 2025 not only honoured the past but also laid a bold vision for the state’s sustainable and inclusive future.
